A Small Amount of a Very Rare Metal

Welsh gold comes from a handful of historic mines in the hills around Dolgellau, Gwynedd — among them St David's and Gwynfynydd. Mining there peaked during a Welsh gold rush in the 1800s, but the seams were never large, and today what remains is scarce enough that genuine Welsh gold makes up a tiny fraction of the world's gold supply. Clogau is the jewellery house with an ongoing, authorised connection to it, alloying a small amount of the genuine metal into sterling silver and 9ct or 18ct gold pieces.

The Royal Connection

Since the 1920s, a nugget of Welsh gold has traditionally been used to craft the wedding rings of the British Royal Family, a tradition said to have begun with the Queen Mother and continued through the generations since, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, and Diana, Princess of Wales — and widely reported to continue with the modern royal family today.
