Diamond Buying Guide - The 4 C's

When buying a diamond, it’s important to know the 4 C’s—Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. These factors decide how your diamond looks, sparkles, and holds its value.

Cut is key, as it controls how well the stone reflects light and how much it shines. Colour is graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less colour, the rarer the diamond. Clarity looks at tiny marks or inclusions. Most are too small to see, but diamonds with fewer marks are more valuable. Carat measures weight, not just size. A well-cut diamond can look larger than its weight suggests.

Balancing these four qualities helps you choose the perfect diamond for your style and budget. Understanding the 4 C’s makes finding a beautiful stone simple and enjoyable.

Clarity

Diamond

Clarity reflects the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes. Fewer imperfections mean a higher clarity grade.

CUT

DIAMOND

Cut determines how much a diamond sparkles. While shape refers to the outline, cut is about proportions, symmetry, and polish.

COLOUR

DIAMOND

Diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow/brown). The less colour, the more rare and valuable.

CARAT

DIAMOND

Carat is a measurement of weight. One carat = 200 milligrams.
Consider carat as 0-100 points scale. If you have a 50 point diamond, then it weighs 0.50 carats. Bear in mind that two diamonds of identical weight may have different values depending on cut, colour and clarity.
