THE 4 C's Diamond Buying Guide
The 4 C's — Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat — are the globally recognised standards established by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) for grading the quality of any diamond in the world. Together they determine the value and price of a diamond, and when combined, make every diamond entirely unique. Whether you're searching for an engagement ring, a special gift or a personal treat, understanding the 4 C's will help you make a confident, informed choice. Our team is always on hand in-store to guide you through your selection.

1. Clarity
Diamond
Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes within a diamond. The fewer the imperfections, the higher the clarity grade — and the more rare and valuable the stone. Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, meaning even a VS or SI grade diamond can appear perfectly flawless when worn.

2. CUT
DIAMOND
Cut is widely considered the most important of the 4 C's because it directly determines how much a diamond sparkles. Cut is not about the shape of the diamond — it refers to the proportions, symmetry and polish of the facets. A perfectly cut diamond reflects light from every facet back through the crown, producing maximum brilliance and fire.

3. COLOUR
DIAMOND
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D to Z, where D is completely colourless and the most rare, and Z shows a noticeable yellow or brown tint. The difference between grades is subtle to the untrained eye, making G to J grades a popular and excellent-value choice — near colourless in appearance but more accessible in price.

4. CARAT
DIAMOND
Carat is the unit used to measure a diamond's weight. One carat equals 200 milligrams (0.2 grams) and is divided into 100 points — so a 0.50ct diamond is a 50-point diamond. Importantly, two diamonds of identical carat weight can have very different values depending on their cut, colour and clarity. A well-cut 0.50ct diamond will often outshine a poorly cut 0.75ct stone.
Quick Diamond Buying Tips
Prioritise cut above all else — it has the greatest impact on brilliance and sparkle. Choose G–H colour for excellent value without visible tint. SI1–VS2 clarity grades are ideal for most buyers — inclusions invisible to the naked eye. Set a budget first, then maximise cut quality within it. Consider lab grown diamonds for identical brilliance at a more accessible price. Ask to see the diamond in natural light before purchasing.
